Day 1: God's Presence Changes Everything
Based on the Message: "Worship While You Work" by Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.
"And the Lord was with Joseph, so he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian." - Genesis 39:2
Devotional: Joseph endured loss and slavery, yet he became successful because "the Lord was with Joseph." His story reveals that real success in any circumstance comes from God's continual presence, not from circumstances themselves.
God's presence is not limited to certain places or days; it is meant to empower us wherever we are. When we realize this, we naturally allow our spiritual life to shape our work life. God desires to be present in every part of our week, making our daily efforts meaningful.
To live this out, we must recognize God's presence each day. Instead of reacting to work challenges with frustration, start by praying to God. His presence brings not just comfort but also wisdom, patience, and a kind of favor that stands out at work.
Tomorrow, invite God's presence as you begin your day. When you face a challenge at work, pause and pray. Seek to be productive by letting God's character shine through your actions, not just by completing tasks.
Quote: "God’s presences makes us productive. Don’t just lock God’s presence in the sanctuary or your prayer closet. Lord was with Joseph, so he became a successful man, even in slavery. The presence of God makes a difference!" - Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.
Question: How would your work change if you invited God's presence daily?
Prayer: Father, I acknowledge that Your presence makes all the difference. Just as You were with Joseph in slavery and made him successful, I ask You to be present with me in my workplace each day. Guide my actions, decisions, and interactions so that I can be mindful of You in all situations, not just in Sunday worship moments. Help me reflect Your presence by being productive and honoring You in my work. When challenges arise, remind me to seek You first and trust Your guidance. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Day 2: Faithful in the Small Things
Based on the Message: "Worship While You Work" by Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.
"Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much, and whoever is unrighteous in very little is also unrighteous in much." - Luke 16:10
Devotional: Joseph's rise from pit to palace wasn't sudden. It resulted from consistent faithfulness at every level. In Potiphar's house, in prison, and eventually in Pharaoh's court, Joseph proved himself reliable with whatever was placed in his hands, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant.
Many of us are waiting for a "big break" while neglecting the small assignments right in front of us. We dream of the corner office while complaining about our current cubicle. We want to lead major projects while rushing through routine tasks. God's kingdom operates differently. He evaluates our readiness for greater responsibility based on how we handle current obligations.
Faithfulness isn't just about completing tasks; it's about maintaining integrity, excellence, and godly character regardless of who's watching. When we approach small assignments with the same diligence we'd bring to major projects, we're actually being faithful to God, not just to our human supervisors.
Consider your current responsibilities, even those you view as beneath your skill level. The main takeaway is this: God observes how you handle the "small things" because how you approach them is what prepares you for greater opportunities.
Quote: "The principle is to be faithful over a few things. We must give our first and best to even the smallest tasks. We are not just being faithful to the task, but to the Lord we represent." - Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.
Question: What "small things" has God placed in your hand to prepare you for greater responsibilities?
Prayer: Lord, help me to see my current responsibilities through Your eyes. Whether I'm filing papers or making strategic decisions, let me approach each task with faithfulness and excellence. Remove any attitude of entitlement or impatience from my heart. Teach me to serve You in the small things, knowing that You are preparing me for whatever comes next. Help me remember that my faithfulness to You is demonstrated through my faithfulness to the work You've placed in my hands today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Day 3: Your Work Is Your Witness
Based on the Message: "Worship While You Work" by Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.
"Let your light so shine before men, so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." - Matthew 5:16
Devotional: Potiphar didn't share Joseph's faith, yet he recognized that Joseph's God was the source of his success. Joseph's work ethic, integrity, and results spoke louder than any religious words he could have spoken. His excellence in the workplace became a testimony to the reality of his relationship with God.
Too often, we separate our witness from our work. We think evangelism happens only through words. But our daily work performance should testify to the God we serve. When we cut corners, show up late, or do mediocre work, we may communicate that our faith doesn't lead to real-world effectiveness.
Your coworkers watch how you handle deadlines and treat customers. They see how you respond to criticism and maintain integrity. They may never read a Bible, but they read your life. You are witnessing, but you must consider what kind of witness you provide.
You will not be perfect. But you must be intentional. If you make a mistake, own it and make it right. When challenges come, respond with prayer and wisdom. Avoid panic and complaints. Let your work show the difference Christ makes in a person's life.
Quote: "Your work is your witness. If your conduct at work is janky, no wonder coworkers ain't accepting your invitation to come to worship." - Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.
Question: If your coworkers were to describe your God based solely on observing your work, what would they say?
Prayer: Father, convict my heart where my work has been a poor reflection of who You are. I want my excellence, integrity, and character to point people to You. Help me to work with such distinction that others are curious about the source of my motivation and strength. When I make mistakes, give me the humility to own them and make them right. Let every task I complete be done with such care that it brings glory to Your name and draws others to want what I have in You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Day 4: Anointed for Agency
Based on the Message: "Worship While You Work" by Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.
"Now his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord made all that he did prosper in his hand." - Genesis 39:3
Devotional: Joseph faced hardships that would crush many: betrayal, slavery, false accusations, and imprisonment. Yet at every stage, he maintained his agency. He couldn't control events, but he controlled his response. He couldn't choose his circumstances, but he chose his character.
Many believers stay disempowered, blaming external factors for lack of progress. "My boss doesn't appreciate me." "My coworkers are difficult." "The economy is bad." These may be true, but focusing on what we can't control robs us of the power to act on what we can.
God gives you agency—the ability to make godly choices and take action, no matter your environment. You can't control your supervisor's mood, but you can control your response. You can't control office politics, but you can control your integrity. You can't control market conditions, but you can control your work ethic and attitude.
This anointing for agency means that even in restrictive situations, you can choose excellence, kindness, integrity, and faith. These consistent choices create a foundation for God to give you greater opportunity and influence.
Quote: "Agency is an individual's ability to make choices and take intentional actions towards a goal. Wake up this morning and recognize what you actually have control of. You can't control your boss, but you can control your actions."- Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.
Question: Where have you focused on what you can't control at work, rather than using the agency God has given you?
Prayer: Lord, forgive me for focusing on what I cannot control. Open my eyes to the agency You've given me in every situation. Help me own my decisions, attitude, and responses. Anoint me to honor You in my choices, even when things are hard. Give me wisdom to act with purpose toward Your will. Let me never give up my agency to circumstances or others. In Jesus Christ's name, Amen.
Day 5: That "Whatever?" It's Worship
Based on the Message: "Worship While You Work" by Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.
"Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord and not for people." Colossians 3:23
Devotional: The word "whatever" in this verse isn't dismissive - it's comprehensive. Paul is declaring that we should give our best to "whatever" task we are given. This single word revolutionizes how we view our work. It eliminates the hierarchy we create between "important" and "unimportant" tasks.
Whether you work in finance, the drive-through, as a temp, a veteran, at your dream job, or just paying bills—whatever you do, do it heartily, as for the Lord. Approach each task with the excellence you’d give if Jesus Himself assigned it to you.
This perspective creates a shift: 'whatever' moves from flippant to intentional, changing everything. Instead of grudgingly completing tasks we think beneath us, we see every assignment as worship through work. Filing becomes service to the God of order; customer service shows God's love; problem-solving partners with the God of wisdom.
When we accept the Lord as our ultimate boss, it changes how and why we work. We're no longer just earning paychecks; we're storing up treasures in heaven and building an eternal testimony.
Quote: "You need to go from 'whatever' to 'whatever.' You see that difference? It's one thing to shrug your shoulds and say 'whatever.' That's a flippant response. By contrast, Paul teaches us that 'whatever' we do, heartily as for the Lord."- Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.
Question: Reflect on a work or ministry task you have sometimes viewed lightly. In what ways might you intentionally adjust your mindset and approach regarding this task?
Prayer: Father, help me move from a flippant mindset to wholehearted dedication in each task. Let me see every responsibility as a chance to serve You with excellence. Remove pride and laziness; grant me strength to pursue excellence in all I do. Let my actions point others to You. Show me today how to serve You better. Thank You for the privilege of working for You, who sees and rewards faithfulness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
