You Heard the Man… Let’s Go Fishing: 5 Day Devotional

Here are a few additional resources to guide your quiet time this week:

Day 1: The Great Soul Search

Based on the Message: "You Heard the Man… Let’s Go Fishing" by Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16

Devotional: In the heavenly realms there's a profound battle taking place - a battle for souls. Every day, countless individuals are being pulled in different directions, some toward light and others toward darkness. God is fishing for souls… but so is the devil. This spiritual reality affects each of us, whether we realize it or not. God, in His infinite love and mercy, is actively seeking to draw people to Himself, offering eternal life through His Son Jesus Christ.

Quote: "God's bait is love. Satan's bait is deception. The question is, which one has you hooked?" - Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

Question: "Think about your past. In what ways did Satan deceive you before the truth of Jesus changed you?"

Prayer: Loving Father, thank You for pursuing us with Your perfect love. Help us to recognize and respond to Your gentle drawing in our lives. Give us wisdom to discern between truth and deception, and grace to follow Your leading. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Day 2: Repentance is Necessary

Based on the Message: "You Heard the Man… Let’s Go Fishing" by Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

"From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near."" - Matthew 4:17

Devotional: Jesus began His public ministry with a call to repentance, recognizing our need for a change of heart and mind. This change isn't just about feeling sorry, but about turning away from our old ways and embracing God's way. Think about areas in your life where you might need to repent. Are there habits, thoughts, or behaviors that are keeping you from fully following Christ?

Quote: "When you were really saved, you reflect on how you used to live apart from Christ... and regret it." - Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

Question: Just as the disciples immediately left their nets, what might you need to leave behind to follow Jesus more closely?

Prayer: Lord, give me the the courage to abandon former mentalities, make necessary changes, and walk in a new direction.

Day 3: From Death to Life

Based on the Message: "You Heard the Man… Let’s Go Fishing" by Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

"As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins" - Ephesians 2:1

Devotional: We were once spiritually dead, following the ways of the world and our own desires. But God, in His rich mercy, made us alive with Christ. This passage reminds us of the dramatic transformation that occurs when we accept God's gift of salvation. Reflect on your own journey from spiritual death to life. How has God's grace changed you?

Quote: "You weren't always saved, sanctified and filled with the Holy Spirit. Theologically speaking, there was a season in your life where you were dead in your trespasses and sins" - Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

Question: When you reflect on your own salvation journey, in what ways were you dead in your trespasses and sins?

Prayer: Lord, continue Your transformative work in me. Help me to crucify my flesh daily and make me more like Christ each day. Amen.

Day 4: From Personal to Purpose

Based on the Message: "You Heard the Man… Let’s Go Fishing" by Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” - Matthew 4:19

Devotional: Spiritual maturity involves shifting our focus from personal concerns to Kingdom purposes. While God cares about our individual needs, He calls us to participate in His larger mission of reaching souls. This transition requires us to see beyond our immediate circumstances and recognize that we're part of something much bigger than ourselves. When we align our hearts with God's purpose, our personal challenges find their proper perspective.

Quote: "If God is concerned about souls, then we should be too."- Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

Question: "How can you shift your focus today from personal concerns to Kingdom purposes in a practical way?"

Prayer: God, help me see beyond myself to Your greater purpose. Show me how to use my circumstances, challenges, and victories for Your glory and the advancement of Your Kingdom. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Day 5: Immediate Response

Based on the Message: "You Heard the Man… Let’s Go Fishing" by Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

"They immediately left their nets and followed Him." - Matthew 4:20

Devotional: In our walk with God, timing matters. When God speaks, He desires an immediate response. Too often, we hesitate, analyze, and rationalize until the moment of opportunity passes. The disciples' immediate response to Jesus's call demonstrates the power of prompt obedience. While wisdom is important, overthinking can become a form of disobedience. God is looking for people who will trust His leading and respond with quick obedience.

Quote: "We need to get to the place where we respond to God's word without thinking ourselves out of what God said."- Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

Question: "What has God been asking you to do that you've been hesitating on, and what's one step you can take today in obedience?"

Prayer: Dear Lord, forgive me for times I've hesitated to follow Your leading. Give me courage to respond quickly when You call, trusting that Your timing is perfect. In Jesus' name, Amen.
